A CMS or Content Management System is a system that runs in the back end of your website. A CMS is almost always only visible for the website owner. We get calls all the time from people asking for a website that they can update themselves. The questions go like this: "I want a website that I can update without calling you." Well, that is where a CMS comes into play. Let’s use this website as an example for this discussion: http://www.apartments-california.com

There are 2 CMS modules on that site. One for apartments for rent and the other one for apartments for sale. The site owner controls those 2 sections. He can create listings and create photo galleries for each listing. The CMS re-sizes the images, creates thumbnails and everything else. The only tool you need is your browser and sometimes if wanted a tool like Photoshop is also welcome. You would use Photoshop to mainly re-size pictures and optimize them for your needs. The CMS can resize pictures if wanted. We have a pretty good library in our server that resizes images without losing quality. Most server come with a standard library. The down side is that it loses a lot of quality when resizing.

The other thing would be security. Make sure the logging to your admin is secure. I have seeing CMSs that are very unsecure. Tell your web master you want your admin secure! It is a must when handling important data.
